RYTHMIC LACE
The study of cymatics is the science of visualizing sounds. Different vibrations generate different patterns and the movements of the particles are constantly changing based on the vibration and frequency. Rhythmic textiles techniques will be the main focus of this project. This project explores the new possibilities of creating lace through machine knitting and laser cutting. Translating sounds and music into fabrics by creating punch cards that can be used in machine knitting and patterns that can be laser cut. As for the silhouettes and shapes of the designs, they are inspired by the cymatic patterns, specifically the folds, radiation, and curvy lines of the patterns. They also meant to highlight the movement of the patterns. Beading is another focus within this project that is meant to generate sounds and further assist visualize the cymatics patterns. The beads are stringed and embroidered on the textiles to generate sounds when the wearer moves around.
